Why you need a Retinoid in your Skincare Routine!

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

Everyone is a candidate for retinol, even if you are blemish free with no hyperpigmentation. If you have acne, blemishes, or congested skin then you definitely need to be on a Retinoid. If you are at least 30 years old and not on any form of Retinoid then it’s time to up your skincare game! Common skin goals that I hear from my clients are smooth texture, less congestion, less wrinkles and fine lines, more hydration and better laxity. Retinol is a staple product and a secret weapon in any a proper skincare routine to address these concerns.

Retinoids come in different forms. Essentially what they are doing is chemical causing the upper layers of dead skin cells to fall off (desquamate). In addition, the ingedients cause a positive shift in the way that your skin cells behave. Retinoids awaken your sleeping skin cells and make them produce more collagen, elastin, and hold hydration. When using a Retinoid product you will also find that the need for a moisturizer decreases. And because the dead layers of skin are falling off, you will always have smoother texture, smaller pores, less blackheads, and your freshest and newest skin will always be on the surface. You will always be putting your “best face foward.”

Tretinoin (aka Retin-A) is pure vitamin A and is indicated for treating acne but is often used off label for fine lines and wrinkles - I usually recommend this product for clients with acne or thicker more oily skin. Retinols on the other hand are great option because they are a derivative of Vitamin A (Tretinoin) which means they often have less of the transient side effects that Tretinoin has. Many medical grade skincare lines, like Jan Marini, have potent and effective strength retinols with additional moisturzing ingredients that can help your skin get used to the products.

My Favorite retinols are: Jan Marini Luminate and Jan Marini Age Intervention Retinol
